Zhang Zhang joined Volition Capital in 2026 and serves as the firm’s first Head of AI and Technology.
Prior Experience & Education
- Zhang studied economics and computer science at the University of Chicago (where he violated the maximum employment limit to hold three part-time jobs), earned his MBA from Yale School of Management (where he violated the attendance policy to moonlight at a hardware startup), and holds the CFA charter.
- Before joining Volition, Zhang led data science, risk, and AI initiatives at Polen Capital. Earlier in his career, he was a business analyst at Fidelity Investments and a consultant at Analysis Group.
Fun Facts About Zhang Zhang
- Zhang and his wife have two young children, who are constantly providing new lessons in negotiation, improvisation, and the limits of optimization when training biological neural networks.
- He is an enthusiastic home cook who loves exploring different cuisines and an avid traveler who has visited 26 countries (and counting), including driving on road trips through eight.
- Zhang built an Android photography app for fun that surpassed 280,000 downloads and somehow cornered the Indonesian photos-on-receipt-paper market. Coincidentally, his personal photo collection now contains roughly as many pictures, which he’s trying to organize with computer vision.
- In general, he enjoys hands-on tinkering, especially finding ways to give old-fashioned objects new capabilities. Piano tuning, residential security systems, woodcarving, and smart sewage systems are among his recent interests.
